Avalanche Of Disposable Addresses

Email continues to be the dominant communication tool between organizations and their customers however with the continuous stream of messages and newsletters that are distributed as well as the relentless onslaught of spammers, it comes as no surprise that users often turn to an emerging class of products that provide real but temporary, disposable email addresses for users to complete their transactions without actually committing with their primary one.

So what are these products’ actual offerings? Simply put, it is to provide an alternative way of sharing and managing email addresses. A unique email address is created for every contact, thus creating a point-to-point connection between the owner and the organization. So if the organization abuses the relationship with unwarranted emails or compromises the email, the owner can simply discontinue or “dispose of” the account. That process seems harmless enough to legitimate organizations, however creating and managing multiple disposable addresses can also become a chore for address owners so disposable addresses are commonly shared with multiple organizations until they have earned the owner’s trust.

The problem for marketers arises when the number of unwanted messages reaches the owner’s tolerance threshold and that account is ultimately disposed. However if a legitimate marketer was sending relevant emails, not only would those emails not be delivered anymore, the marketer is likely to face deliverability issues due to bounces. This certainly gives new perspective to John Donne’s poem “no man is an island” where the acts of others in the marketing sphere can affect your organization directly. However the situation need not be as dire as the ending of Donne’s famous prose.

To avoid this dilemma, the best practice is to be open at the time of collecting emails as to why you need this information and when the potential recipient can expect emails from your organization. Honestly share who else would have access to this information and the frequency with which they can expect to receive messages from your organization. Empowering recipients with options that shapes future communication with what they want to receive, through what channels and when, can lead to a beneficial outcome for all.

Secondarily, check your legacy data and flag those disposable addresses. Most are time-sensitive or one-time use addresses, so are likely expired. Its worthwhile to remove them as most marketers wouldn’t want to own address that do not generate any value but add to their marketing cost and efforts, and just as importantly can affect their deliverability adversely.

With the floodgates opened, the disposable addresses are now endemic to marketing lists however don’t allow them to accumulate so be persistent in verifying and evaluating emails as part of your on-going marketing efforts.

Why we’ve chosen to generate the temporary email names

As you have noticed, the myTempEmail team, at http://mytemp.email, we only provide temporary email addresses generated by us and we do not allow our users to choose their own custom email address.

We will try to explain in this article why we have chosen this functionality and why we would not implement what some of our users asked for: the possibility to choose their own temporary email addresses (maybe just a workaround).

Important Note! This article refers to the username of the email address, NOT the domain name of the temporary emails.

First of all, this is a temporary email service, it should not matter what your email address is because the the data is volatile and it gets deleted after a certain amount of time. At least this is how we see things. Of course there can be use-cases/flows in which it’s important to have your custom email and of which we do not know about, so please feel free to drop a comment about it and we will analyze and discuss it.

Furthermore, we believe that users who want a custom email address like: office@mytemp.email, admin@mytemp.email, postmaster@mytemp.email, do not want to use our service for the purpose of defeating spam, we feel it’s exactly the opposite, they would use it to send spam or for phishing purposes. In the end, if you are a user who wants to generate your own custom email, what would be the purpose of it (please comment below)?

Secondly, our service is focused on privacy and security. Therefore, we take responsibility for the fact that an email address is used by only 1 user ( the one who requested a temporary email) and this email is protected by a key, which is only known by this user. Of course, it’s up to the user how he manages the url (which contains the key) and if he wants to share it with others. Access to the inbox can only be done through the full url and not just simply by using the email address.

Therefore, if we allow users to create their own email addresses, we can no longer guarantee the security of a temporary inbox. Anybody would be able to verify the incoming emails on admin@mytemp.email and this is not an acceptable case from our point of view.

Last, but not least, as an acceptable solution, there would be the possibility of users pre-indexing their email address with their custom string, like:

syntax: [userString][dot][generated_temporary_email]

ex: if the temporary email generated by mytemp.email is: abc@mytemp.email, in this inbox the emails coming from the address below can be received as well:

john.abc@mytemp.email

obama.abc@mytemp.email

Now it only depends on the users if this would be an acceptable solution and if it’s worth implementing. In order to find out and maybe even discover different approaches, we encourage you to comment on this article, your input will be appreciated.

În viața de zi cu zi de pe internet, email-ul încă reprezintă o tehnologie ce foarte greu se va renunta la ea. Și ca întotdeauna se gasesc baieții șmecheri care încearcă să facă, să dreagă ca să scoată un ban… avem o problemă în plus: spam-ul, care, totuși, ne mănâncă timp prețios dedicat task-urilor ce le avem de făcut.

Astfel se motivează existența proiectului spamtrap.ro care ajuta deținătorii de domenii de a bloca spam-ul trimis către domeniile lor și astfel… scăpați de reclamele enervante și inutile și puteți să vă concentrați la a fi mult mai productivi.

In timpul liber mai citesc din diferite surse de informatii despre ce se mai intimpla… blablabla… ca tot omu curios. Una dintre cele mai monitorizate surse de catre mine e cea de la ycombinator pentru ca acolo se gasesc unii sa posteze ceva linkuri interesante si pentru mine (recunosc ca nu tot ce se posteaza acolo e coool).

Avand deja experienta in a da refresh deseori la pagina celor de yc am dat de un “feature” cred foarte enervant pentru mine ca cititor. Ei folosesc un mecanizm de paginare/sesiuni foarte necunoscut mie si se intimpla deseori sa citesc ceva noutati mai vechi de pe pagina a 3-a sau a 4-a dupa care sa imi expire variabila de sesiune, ne mai putand naviga mai departe noutatile de pe pagina a 5-a.
